Sarah Ann (Carner) Samples, 91, of McDowell passed away Sunday, April 11, 2021 at the home of her son, John, in Paducah, Ky.
She was born in Clarksburg, MS, on July 7, 1929, a daughter of the late Edna Banta (King) and John Harriss Carner. On September 9, 1948 she married Charles William Samples Jr., who preceded her in death on May 18, 1979.
Sarah graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry with minors in Mathematics and Physics from King College in Bristol, VA. She received her Masters of Arts in Secondary Education degree from the University of Mississippi.
A beloved teacher, Sarah taught chemistry, physics, math seven through pre-calculus, and other subjects as required during her 35 years of teaching in the Highland County Public School system. In addition, Sarah held offices in the local and regional chapters of the Virginia Education Association.
One who loved to be involved with her community, Sarah was a member, past elder, past Clerk of Session, Superintendent of Sunday School, and past President and Treasurer of the Presbyterian Women of the McDowell Presbyterian Church. Sarah was a charter member of the Highland Historical Society and served in various capacities. She was also a charter member of the Highland Center and served on the Board and was past President of the Highland Medical Center. In addition, Sarah served on boards of the Highland Public Library, the Highland Extension Homemakers, and the Monterey Garden Club.
An avid antiques collector, among Sarah’s favorites were invalid feeders. She also enjoyed gardening and reading.
Sarah is survived by her son, John William Samples and wife, Kimberly of Paducah, KY; grandsons, Charles Glen Samples of West Chester, Ohio and James Adam Samples and wife, Madison of Loveland, Ohio; great-grandson, John William Bear Samples; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her brother, Bill Carner.
A graveside funeral service will be held 1 p.m., Monday, April 19, 2021 in Clover Creek Cemetery, with Rev. Beth Pyles officiating.
Obaugh Funeral Home will receive family and friends wishing to pay their respects Sunday, April 18, between the hours of noon and 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
