Winston Gilmer “Ruben” Ervine, 85, of Head Waters died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008 at his home. He was born December 19, 1922 near Head Waters, a son of the late Sallie Belle Ervine. On August 12, 1978, he married Ruby (Teter) Ervine.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, his first wife, Maybelline Roxanne (Varner) Ervine, who he married on September 21, 1946 and died May 30, 1977.
Mr. Ervine was an avid farmer, blacksmith, tinner, sheep shearer, woodworker and hunter. He rarely met a stranger. He was a member of the Farm Bureau and an honorary member of the McDowell Volunteer Fire Department.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby Ervine of Head Waters; three daughters and husbands, Marcia and Paul Wiseman of Harrisonburg; Karen and Donnie Botkin of Head Waters and Donna and Mike Golladay of Staunton; a step-daughter and husband, Patsy and Bert Moyers of Mt Crawford; six grandchildren, Heather and Todd Wiseman, Adam and wife, Alisha Botkin, Amber Botkin, Luke and Tyler Golladay; two step-grandchildren, Trina and Christopher Moyers; one step-great-grandson, Quentin Moyers and four half-sisters, Emily Lou Bruguiere of Roseland, Barbara Helms of Amherst, Patricia Stevens of Roseland and Marjori Midkiff of Martinsville.
A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m., Tuesday, September 30, 2008 at Obaugh Funeral Home with the Rev. Andre Crummett and Rev. Richard Gibson officiating. Burial will be in Head Waters Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be grandsons, Mike Armstrong, Nelson Simmons and Raymond Grogg. Honorary pallbearers will be granddaughters and friends.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m., Monday at the funeral home.
