William Nicholas “Nick” Beverage, 94, of Monterey, died Saturday, March 14, 2009 at his home. He was born May 7, 1914, a son of Isaac Luther and Clara Hester (Seybert) Beverage.
Mr. Beverage studied at the University of Virginia and then returned to Monterey, where he was the county surveyor and a member of the Lions Club for several years. He moved to Newport News and worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Ft. Eustis from 1943 to 1978, retiring as the Director of Engineering. In Newport News, he was a member of the St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church and was a consultant for Horne Brothers Engineering. In 1979 he returned to Highland County and enjoyed farming, gardening, surveying and traveling to see his family, including trips to the Far East. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, Mill Gap Ruritan Club, past president and manager of Monterey Cemetery, past coordinator for Highland County Emergency Services, a volunteer for the Highland County Fair and one of the foremost historians of Highland County.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Nicola O’Connor; three brothers, Seybert, James and Albert Beverage and two sisters, Virginia Beverage and Rebecca Mohney.
He is survived by his wife, Jayne Elizabeth (Smith) Beverage of Monterey; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Edward Magilley of Charlotte, NC; three sons and two daughters-in-law, James and Gee Beverage of Charlottesville, Jerome and Gail Beverage of Richmond and W. Nicholas Beverage, Jr. of Knoxville, TN; a son-in-law, Dennis O’Connor of Waynesboro; eleven grandchildren, Ted, Brian and Mark Magilley, Ryan and Devon O’Connor, Justin and Erin Beverage, Rebecca, Sam and Hannah Beverage and Nicole Beverage; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Lucinda Beverage of Monterey and two brothers, Dr. John Beveridge of Nashville, TN; Charles Beverage of Richmond and a number of nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Thursday, March 19, 2009 at Monterey Cemetery with Father Tony Andres officiating. Pallbearers will be family and friends in attendance. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell.
