William Gilbert Obaugh, 68, of McDowell died unexpectedly Monday afternoon, January 1, 1996 at his residence.
Born at McDowell in Highland County, September 15, 1927, the son of of Roy Gilbert and Myrtle Flesher Obaugh. He married Wilma Hodge on January 29, 1949 at Staunton, a union of 45 years.
He was a member of the McDowell United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the V.F.W Post 9666 and of the Highland Masonic Lodge 110 A.F. & A.m. Mr. Obaugh was a charter member of the Stonewall Ruritan Club. He was a farmer and ran an excavating firm from 1949-1966 when he took over operations of the Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell. He was also a member of the Highland County Fiddle and Bow Club.
In addition to his widow, he is survived by three sons, G.W. Obaugh of Roanoke, Brent Obaugh of McDowell and Kyle Obaugh and wife, Karla of McDowell; one daughter, Donna Obaugh Ashby and husband, Forrest of Churchville.; nine grandchildren, Bryan, Ben, Bryce and Beth Obaugh of Roanoke, Kelly, Jenny and Emily Ashby of Churchville and Kate and Kari Obaugh of McDowell.
Also surviving is his stepmother, Claudine Obaugh of McDowell.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 4, 1996 at Head Waters Cemetery officiated by Revs. Tim Strock, Richard Gibson, Steve McMillion, Jerry Ginn and Bill Cox.
Active pallbearers will be Randolph Simmons, James H. Armstrong, Louis Smith, Tom Griffin, Jacob Hevener, Roy Gutshall, Neal Sawyers, Lee and Matt Blagg.
The family will receive friends tonight, 6-9 p.m. at Obaugh Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the Highland Medical Center or the Highland Rescue Squad, Monterey, Va. 24465 or the McDowell United Methodist Church, PO Box 41, McDowell, Va. 24458.
