William “Dale” Gum, 78, died Sunday, November 14, 1999 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
He was born February 16, 1921, at Mustoe, a son of Albert Sylvester and Mary Susan (McAllister) Gum.
On July 25, 1943, he married Reba Varner.
He was a member of Monterey United Methodist Church. He retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation after 30 years of service.
He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Leo Gum; two brothers; and a sister. He was the last member of his immediate family.
Surviving are his wife, Reba Gum of Monterey; two daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Gene Grant and Gladys and Raymond Downey of Clifton Forge; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Teddy William and Beth Gum of Roanoke and Jerry Gum of Richmond; five grandchildren; and a special friend Jim Burns.
A service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Obaugh Funeral Home by the Revs. Stephanie Wilson and Jerry Ginn, with burial in Monterey Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Charles and Jimmy Varner, Dwayne and Timothy Downey, Steve and Junior Sweitzer. Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons and co-workers.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 Tuesday at the funeral home.
