William Gillespie

William Harlon Gillespie, 84, of Monterey died Friday, July 28, 2000 at the Bridgewater Home, Inc.

He was born April 3, 1916 at Cass, W.Va., a son of Connell P. and Hattie Jackson Gillespie.

He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Cecelia Viering Gillespie, and a sister Talma Gay Gillespie.

Mr. Gillespie was schooled in West Virginia, where he graduated from Green Bank High School. He attended National Business College in Roanoke. He served in the U.S. Navy from January 1944 until February 1946.

His working career included positions at West Virginia Pulp & Paper in Cass, W.Va. and the J.E. Arbogast Lumber Co. in Monterey. He was postmaster in Monterey when he retired in 1976.

He was a member of Monterey United Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4989, and the Highland County Volunteer Fire Department. In his early years he was avid fisherman and later enjoyed gold.

He is survived by two sisters, Mary Ann G. Corbett and her husband, Gordon, of Richmond, and Ruth G. Simpson of Bethesda, Md.; three nieces, Brenna G. Tobler of her husband, Charles, of Arlington, Rachel Ann Simposn and her husband, Donald Umstadter, of Ann Arbor, Mich. and Christina viering of Indianapolis, Ind.; three nephews, Barton M. Simpson of and his wife Teri, of San Antonio, Texas, Peter D. Viering and Garry P. Viering of Casselberry, Fla; and by one great-niece, Malia Gail Simpson of San Antonio.

A graveside service was conducted at 11 .m. Tuesday, August 1 at the Monterey Cemetery by the Rev. Jerry Ginn.
