William F. Banks, age 71, of The Big Lonely, Monterey died Wednesday, December 6, 2006 at his residence.
He was born March 1, 1935 in Washington, D.C. a son of the late, William Strang and Josephine (Hartman) Banks.
Mr. Banks graduated from Landon School in Bethesda, MD in 1954 and Harvard University in 1958. He was a builder, developer and manager, vice-president and president of Banks and Lee, Inc., a general contracting firm founded by Mr. Banks’ father, just after WWII and operated by the Banks family. Mr. Banks was president of Scott Management, Inc., which he formed in 1961, specializing in the management of several large apartment communities in the DC, MD and VA areas. In 1991, he retired, to his farm, The Big Lonely, in Monterey, VA.
During the 60’s and 70’s, Mr. Banks showed his commitment to providing quality rental housing and improving industry standards. He was a vice-president and president of the Home Builders Association of suburban, VA; a member of Home Builders Association of Metropolitan Washington and member of its board of directors, membership committee and chairman of its business management committee. He was a member of Washington Building Congress, Building Owners and Managers Association and Junior Chamber of Commerce.
Since his retirement, he was a member of Bolar Ruritan Club and chairman of its scholarship committee; the president and member of Highland Medical Center Board of Directors; a member of American Saddlebred Horse Association, member and sponsorship chairman of American Saddlebred Horse Association of Virginia; a member of United States Equestrian Federation and American Saddlebred Horse Museum and a major donor to the Virginia Horse Center.
Mr. Banks was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Strang Banks.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Karin M. Banks of Monterey; four daughters, Jenny (Banks) Murray of Edinburgh, Scotland, Kerry (Banks) Vatis of Shelburne, VT, Robin (Banks) Beatty of Alexandria, Kirsten (Banks) Stepanyants of Hingham, MA and twelve grandchildren.
A private ceremony will be held at The Big Lonely, and a memorial service will be held at a later date.
