Vertura M. Hammer, age 77, of McDowell, died Saturday, June 24, 2006 at Augusta Medical Center. She was born July 14, 1928 in Harrisonburg, a daughter of the late Oscar and Grace (Wooddell) Malcom.
Mrs. Hammer was a homemaker and had worked at Aileen, Inc. for a number of years. She was a member of McKendree United Methodist Church, McDowell Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and the Home Demonstration Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John David Hammer on February 24, 2002.
She is survived by a daughter Patricia Hammer of McDowell; a son, John M. Hammer and his wife, Kim of McDowell; two grandchildren, J. B. Hammer of McDowell and Crystal Lindsay of Staunton; two great-grandchildren, Zachary and Patricia Lindsay; a sister-in-law, Anna Lee Pullin of Staunton; two nephews; three great-nephews and many special friends.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m., Tuesday, June 27, 2006 at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell by the Rev. Dave Boger. Burial will be in the McKendree Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Everett Gardner, Jim Armstrong, Kevin Armstrong, Steve Armstrong, Tim Hawes, David Simmons and Vernon Wooddell.
Honorary pallbearers will be Benny Armstrong, David Armstrong, Dale Botkin, Noel Hull, Dick Hiner and friends attending the service.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m., Monday, June 26, 2007 at the funeral home.
