Vernon “Harold” Newman, 89, of Blue Grass passed away Wednesday, February 10, 2021 at his home.
He was born in Blue Grass on June 16, 1931, a son of the late Marie (Hammer) and Walter Vernon Newman.
Following graduation from Blue Grass High School, Harold, served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a sergeant in the 300 th Field Artillery Regiment. He was a member of the former New Church United Methodist Church and former member of the Blue Grass Ruritan Club.
After his retirement from VDOT with 30 years of service, Harold thoroughly enjoyed his time working on his farm, alongside his wife, Nancy. Above all, being an avid outdoorsman, he loved spending time at his camp in Laurel Fork, where he enjoyed time spent fishing, hunting, cutting firewood and exploring.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Nancy Hise Newman of Blue Grass; daughters, Beth Gum of Roanoke and Ruth Newman of Blue Grass; step-daughter, Vickie Puffenbarger Newton of Roanoke; grandsons, Joshua Gum of Roanoke and Brandon Smith and wife, Hilary of Monterey; great-granddaughters, Makynley, Ashlyn and Olyvia Smith and Emma Gum; as well as great-nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was pre-deceased by his son-in-law, Teddy Gum; step-son, Jerry “Craig” Puffenbarger; sister, Ruby Tichenor and her children, niece, Patsy and nephew, I.L.; as well as special friend, Benny Colaw.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, February 14, 2021 in Blue Grass Cemetery with Rev. Andre Crummett officiating.
Pallbearers will be Brandon Smith, Joshua Gum, Jackie Will, Chris Swecker, Wilson Smith, Jake Colaw, Jason Hise and Gary Jack.
Obaugh Funeral Home will receive family and friends wishing to pay their respects throughout the day Saturday, February 13th, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Blue Grass Cemetery, 3042 Blue Grass Valley Road, Blue Grass, Va. 24413.
