Vergie H. Hiner, age 93, of Staunton and formerly of Mill Gap, died Tuesday, December 26, 2006 at Kings Daughters Community Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born January 18, 1913 at Monterey a daughter of the late Charles Edward and Annie Rebecca (Eye) Hiner.
Mrs. Hiner was a homemaker and the family historian. She was a member and Sunday school teacher of Green Hill United Methodist Church. She was valedictorian of her graduating class at Monterey School. She enjoyed gardening, crossword puzzles, farm work, crocheting and quilting. Her quilting and crocheting won blue ribbons at the Highland County Fair.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Lee Hiner on September 28, 1984; three brothers, Charles, Walter H. and Russell Hiner and two sisters, Ruth Johnson and Madeline Hiner.
She is survived by two daughters, Mary Louise Eckard of Mt. Sidney and Brenda Ziros of Warrenton, four grandchildren, Pamela Clark of Staunton, Penny Via of Mt. Sidney, Jennifer and Amy Ziros of Warrenton; two great-grandchildren, Ashley Via of Mt. Sidney and Brandon Clark of Staunton; a brother, Joseph R. Hiner of Dayton and a sister, Katherine Hiner of Waldorf, MD.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Friday, December 29, 2006 at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell.
Burial will be in Monterey Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home.
