Velma Ellena Smith, 88, of Monterey, passed away Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at The Springs Nursing Center.
Born April 12, 1923 in Pendleton County, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Edward Terry and Ada Catherine Bowers Propst.
Mrs. Smith was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and retired from Hanover Shoe Company. She enjoyed time spent working with her garden and flowers, as well as watching and feeding birds.
Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Randolph Miller “Dot” Smith, who passed away March 12, 2006. Additionally, she was predeceased by two sisters, Laurine Bowman and Sylvia Davis, and three brothers, Raymond, Clinton and William Propst.
She is survived by a daughter and sonin law, Geri and Joe Tuning of Hot Springs; a son and daughter-in-law, Raymond and Betty Smith of Monterey; three grandchildren, Greg and Tim Tuning of Burnsville, and Katrina Smith of Strasburg; three great-grandchildren, Austin, Wade, and Renee Tuning; a sister, Arleta Mullens of Orange; and a special friend, Carol Furr of Monterey
A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m., Friday, May 20, 2011 at Obaugh Funeral Home with the Rev. Andre Crummett and the Rev. Napoleon “Nap” Mullens officiating. Burial will follow in the Smith Family Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Wilson Smith, Fred Whitelaw, Cliff Vandevander, Elmer Waybright, Graham Smith, and Tim and Greg Tuning.
The family will receive friends from 6:30-7:30 p.m., Thursday, May 19, 2011 at the funeral home.
