The Reverend Doctor Larry Dean Turner, 60, of Monterey, died Monday, June 23, 2003 at The Springs Nursing Center in Hot Springs after a long illness.
He was born June 28, 1942 in Danville, a don of the Rev. Charles Edwin Turner and the late Lucille Carolyn Davis Turner.
Dr. Turner was a pastor for almost 40 years, currently at Church of God of Prophecy in Monterey. He preached in more than 140 countries and pastored in Frankfort, Germany; Honolulu, Hawaii; Goldsboro and Wilmington, N.C. and Miami, Fla.
He was a member of the Monterey Lions Club.
Dr. Turner won his war for eternal life while succumbing to cancer. He knew no other life but to serve his fellow man and church family. After learning he had cancer, he was offered free medical care in Cincinnati, Ohio but graciously refused so he could continue to serve his church and the community of Monterey. He touched lives from multitudes, and his legacy will continue to live through the many who have given their hearts and lives to the Lord Jesus Christ. Many will remember him through his ministry while others will remember Dr. Turner from the Highland-Bath County news article last year naming him the most loved pastor in Highland County.
Several weeks ago, his comments were “If I cannot serve, then I am ready to go to be with the Lord.” That is the life he lived and that is how he will be remembered.
He is survived by his father and stepmother, the Rev. Charles E. and Betty Turner of Danville; a daughter, Barbara Turner of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a son, Derek Turner of Flagstaff, Ariz.; a brother, Ray Turner and wife, Henrietta, of Cincinnati, Ohio; a sister, Janet Briggs and husband Larry of Columbus, Ga.; three nephews; three nieces; nine great-nieces and -nephews and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
A funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 26 at the Church of God of Prophecy by Bishop Steve Gilmer.
Burial was in the Propst-Helmick Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Olin Waybright, William Niswander, Elmer Halterman, Henry Harper, Andy Botkin, Gideon Hiner, David Botkin, Maylan Peters and Ryland Barton.
Honorary pallbearers were friends attending the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of God of Prophecy, Monterey, Va. or the American Cancer Society, Monterey, Va. 24465.
