Dr. Stephen Trinkle Vermillion, 82, of Monterey, passed peacefully at home in his favorite chair, Sunday August 1, 2021. He was born on April 4, 1939 in Princeton, WV, a son of the late Thomas Uriah and Emily Rebecca (Hogge) Vermillion.
He grew up in Beckley, WV and attended Woodrow Wilson High School. He graduated Duke University (1960) where he was a history major and a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He then attended the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry, and completed training as a periodontist at the University of Alabama. He returned to Virginia where he married his loving wife, Constance (Connie) Leary in 1979 and practiced periodontal dentistry for nearly 30 years before retiring to Monterey. He was loved by his patients and colleagues.
Stephen was an avid sports fan, especially for his Duke Blue Devils, and the Great Neck Bulldogs, the youth football team he loved to coach. He had a deep interest in hunting Native American artifacts, and his arrowhead collection was one of the largest private collections in the region. In his retirement, he became a master gardener to build on his passion for nature and the outdoors. He also enjoyed caring for his beloved dogs and cats.
Stephen is survived by his wife of 42 years, Connie Leary Vermillion; his children, Dr. Stephen Vermillion and wife, Melisa of Greenville, SC, Patrick Vermillion and wife, Crystal of Virginia Beach, Marcie Vermillion of Virginia Beach, and Matthew Vermillion and wife, Angela of Soldotna, AK; his three grandchildren, Dr. Emily Vermillion, Caroline Vermillion, and Ella Vermillion; as well as his brother, Dr. Robert Vermillion of Roanoke.
A celebration of Stephen’s life will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, August 7th at the family residence, friends are welcome to attend.
