MONTEREY, VA Shirley Mae Hiner, 75, of Monterey, passed away Sunday, February 15, 2015 at her home. She was born April 2, 1939 in Hot Springs a daughter of the late James and Eva (Gardner) Law. Shirley retired from Highland County Public Schools, where she had been employed as a teacher's aide as well as a cafeteria worker. Mrs. Hiner enjoyed flower gardening and watching eagles, but above all enjoyed time spent with her beloved family. On June 12, 1957, she married Glen David Hiner, who preceded her in death on August 25, 1989. Additionally, Mrs. Hiner was predeceased by her sister, Edith Lindsey and two brothers, Glenn and Curtis Law. She is survived by three sons, James David Hiner and Robin, Carl Hiner and Ruthie, and Kenneth Grey Hiner and Catherine, all of Monterey; four grandchildren, John D. Hiner and wife, Kim, Jamie Hiner, Glen William Hiner and Emily, and Ashley N. Hiner, all of Monterey; three great-grandchildren, Caleb Hiner, Kennedi Lee Hiner and Billy Weaver; a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive. A funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m., Monday, February 23, 2015 at Obaugh Funeral Home with the Rev. Andre Crummett officiating. Burial will follow in the Monterey Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Wilton Simmons, Herbert Lightner, Bill DeAscentis, Frankie DeAscentis, Roger Hiner, Jeff Hiner, Keith Lindsey, Mike Lindsey and Randy Hooke. Honorary pallbearers will be the nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends throughout the day Sunday, February 22, 2015 at the home of Shirley (73 Hiners lane, Monterey, VA 24465). Obaugh Funeral Home will also receive friends throughout the day Sunday for those wishing to pay their last respects and viewing opportunity.
