Sallie Kate Hammer, age 93, of Monterey, died, Wednesday, July 12, 2006 at Stuarts Draft Christian Home. She was born November 3, 1912 at Monterey a daughter of the late Thomas and Mary Etta (Vandevander) Rexrode.
On February 3, 1932, she married Jay Hammer, who preceded her in death on March 27, 1983. She was also predeceased by an infant son, Randolph Eugene Hammer; four sisters, Bonnie Mayrie Hevener, Maggie Jane Rexrode, Geneva Pearl Rexrode and Eva Blanch Beverage and a daughter-in-law, Mary Belle (Neil) Hammer. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Mrs. Hammer was a homemaker. She was a member of the Monterey United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school for 40 years and a member of the United Methodist Women. She was a founding member of Mountain View Homemakers Club, which was formed in 1936. She had also been involved in Highland County Crafts and the Senior Citizens.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Roy Gutshall of Monterey; a son, John Ralph Hammer of Monterey; six grandchildren and their spouses, Angela and Gary Crigler of Monterey, Jay Gutshall of Richmond, Pamela Hoffman of Staunton, Karla and Kyle Obaugh of McDowell, Carol and Jesse Swecker of Maidens and Sherry and Dan Doody of Crozier; twelve great-grandchildren, Amanda Crigler, Erica Ruleman and her husband, Willie, Matthew and Karen Hoffman, Kate, Kari and Rhonda Obaugh, Benjamin and Caitlin Swecker, Casey, Caleb and Emma Doody; two great-great-granddaughters, Allison and Ashley Ruleman and a number of nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Friday, July 14, 2006 at Monterey United Methodist Church by the Rev. Mike Sullivan. Burial will be in Monterey Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be nephews, Douglas, Dale, Elbert, Robert and Sam Rexrode, Henry Hevener, Walter and Wayne Killian. Honorary pallbearers will be friends attending the service.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell.
