Russell Benjamin Varner, 80, of Monterey, died Friday, February 18, 2000 at Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville.
He was born December 26, 1919, at Hightown, a son of Edward and Kate (Strathy) Varner.
He had worked 40 years for Mauzy’s and 10 years for Rexrode’s Appliance in Monterey prior to retirement. He was a member of Monterey United Methodist Church, VFW Post 4989, a past adjutant for American Legion Post 155 and the Highland County Fire Department. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
On May 26, 1947, he married Mary Cayton, who survives.
Also surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Edison McDaniel of Monterey, and Sandra and Gerald Andre of Irwin, Pa.; a son and daughter-in-law, Edward and Elizabeth Varner of Stuarts Draft; and six grandchildren.
A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday at Obaugh Funeral Home, McDowell, by the Revs. Stephanie Wilson and Jerry Ginn, with burial at Blue Grass Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Billy and Eric McDaniel, Jerry Moats, Harry Paul Simmons, Olin Waybright and Gary Rexrode. Honorary pallbearers will be friends attending the service.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
