Roy “Scott” Helmick, 48, of Monterey, died Friday, February 27, 2009 at the University of Virginia Medical Center. He was born August 8, 1960 in Bartow, WV a son of Annie Fay (Tidd) Helmick and the late Lester Scott Helmick.
Scott had worked at the Homestead and was a former member of the Highland County Volunteer Fire Department, Highland County Rescue Squad and Stonewall Ruritan Club.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Steve Allen Helmick and a half-sister, Ocie Fay Hise.
He is survived by his mother, Annie Fay Helmick of Monterey; a niece, Candi Lowry of Millboro, a great-niece, Destynie Lowry; an uncle, Charles Helmick of Walkerton; two aunts, Mona Helmick of Staunton and Jessie Dever of Monterey and a number of cousins.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m., Monday, March 2, 2009 at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell with the Rev. Derek Tomek and the Rev. Andre Crummett officiating. Burial will be in Propst-Helmick Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Roger Simmons, Sr., Richard Waybright, Glenn Halterman, Travis Halterman, R.C. Pullin, Jerry Liptrap, Herman Puffenbarger, Alan Puffenbarger and J.R. Simmons. Honorary pallbearers will be friends attending the service.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home.
