Roscoe Hamilton Roberts, 83, of Burnsville passed away Sunday, December 10, 2023 at his home.
He was born February 14, 1940 in Bath County, a son of the late Clarence Lacy and Mary Virginia (Pullin) Roberts. On April 19, 1963, he married Wanda Mae (Propst) Roberts who preceded him in death on November 20, 2023.
A very active member of his community, Roscoe attended and held membership with Burnsville United Methodist Church, where he served as president of the church’s men’s group. He also served as the former president of the Burnsville Community Center. An electrician by trade, he had also worked in the woods cutting logs and pulpwood, as a sawyer in his father’s sawmill, and for a time he operated his own construction company.
An accomplished musician, Roscoe played the banjo, guitar, mandolin, fiddle and even the french harp. Many community members learned to play music in Roscoe’s kitchen and his music will surely be missed by many. Roscoe was also an avid outdoorsman, who loved hunting and fishing. Above all, he loved being around people, attending dances and organizing local shooting matches to get people together.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his brothers, Randall, Grady Sr., Ritchie, Lacy, Cletis and Raymond Roberts.
He is survived by his daughter, Rebecca “Becky” Dean; grandchildren, Jodi Rucker, Shannon Dean and Charles Rucker, all of Burnsville; a sister, Maudy Schurtz of Woodstock; as well as great-grandchildren, Hadleigh Rucker, Eli McCulley, Braelyn McCulley, Cami McCulley and Jakob McCulley.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m., Wednesday, December 13, 2023 at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell, with Pastor David George officiating. Burial will follow in Burnsville Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jesse Lambert, Scottie Neil, Glen Lowry, Randall Roberts, Adam Neil and Tommy Ady.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Roscoe and Wanda Roberts Memorial Fund, c/o Blue Grass Valley Bank, PO Box 516, Monterey, Va. 24465 to offset end of life expenses.
