Richard "Huie" Dale Mullenax

Richard Dale “Huie” Mullenax, age 71, of Blue Grass, passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2025 at his home.

He was born August 23, 1953 in Blue Grass, a son of the late Joseph Thayer and Mildred Mae (Mullenax) Mullenax.

A mechanic, Huie had worked at Hull’s Shop in Blue Grass for over 20 years and was exceptional with wiring. He was a member and former captain of the Highland County Volunteer Fire Department. Huie was raised in the former New Church United Methodist Church.

A very kindhearted person, Huie loved time spent with family. He enjoyed driving throughout the county, listening to bluegrass and country music, watching action movies and westerns, as well as playing chess and pool. He absolutely disliked modern technology, such as computers and smart phones. Above all he will be remembered as being a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who was a good-humored “go-getter” and loved helping his neighbors.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Derrick Allen Mullenax; and two brothers, Joseph and Donald Mullenax.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Sharon Ann (Simmons) Mullenax of Blue Grass; daughter, LeJetta Marie Mullenax of Blue Grass; brother, Larry Mullenax of Cuchillo, NM; two sisters, Barbara Bennett of Riverton, WV and Janet Mullenax of Blue Grass; grandchildren, Damiaen Mullenax of Mill Gap and Jeremy “Junior” Allen, Lidia Allen, LeVayda Allen, and Latasha Windett; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, March 11, 2025 at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell with the Rev. Andre Crummett officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Grass Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Lanny Wimer, Shea Mullenax, J.W. Tidd, Damiaen Mullenax, Harold Simmons Jr., Pat Hull, Bill Will, and Delmas Lowry.

Family will receive friends 6-8 p.m., Monday, March 10th at the funeral home.
