Richard Washington Hevener Jr, 81, of Harrisonburg, died Wednesday, December 24, 2003, at Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community. Born June 12, 1922, at Hightown, he was the son of the late Richard W. Hevener Sr. and Della Mae Hofsess Hevener.
He married Dorothy Ellen Wimer of Blue Grass on Dec. 8, 1943.
A graduate of VPI, Mr. Hevener piloted 35 missions with the U.S. Air Force as a First Lieutenant during WWII. An aeronautical engineer with General Electric he retired after 35 years of service, having been inducted into G.E.’s Propulsion Hall of Fame in 1987.
Mr. Hevener, a Shriner and member of the Highland Masonic Lodge No. 110 for more than 50 years, served as secretary of the Lodge for eight years. He also served on the Board of Supervisors in Highland County and was a member of the Pisgah Presbyterian Church.
A sister, Charlotte Ann Hevener Nobbs, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Hevener of Harrisonburg; two daughters, Carolyn H. Pohowsky and Sharon Hevener, both of Hightown; three grandchildren, Christopher and Ian Pohowsky and Samantha Greiff; and a brother, Jacob H. Hevener of Hightown.
A memorial service will be conducted at a later date. Obaugh Funeral Home handled the arrangements. The body was cremated.
