Norma “Jean” (Hayward) Smith, 86, of McDowell, passed away Saturday, February 26, 2022 at her home surrounded by her family.
She was born November 2, 1935, in Gaithersburg, MD, a daughter of the late Ralph James and Pearl Irene (Vanhouten) Hayward.
On September 24, 1956 she married Garner Emerson Smith who predeceased her on September 4, 2017.
A woman of strong Christian Faith, Jean was a member of the McDowell Presbyterian Church and McDowell Presbyterian Women. She shared her beautiful voice by singing for her Lord.
Jean taught her daughter it was okay for girls to like sports, as she was an avid sports fan, especially cheering on the Redskins, Orioles and Washington Nationals. She was also a great cook, who passed down her many secrets in the kitchen to her daughter.
She is survived by her daughter, Carole Jean Smith of Glen Allen; and sister Patricia Ann (Hayward) Gordon of Jackson, TN.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, April 9, 2022 at McDowell Presbyterian Church with Rev. Beth Pyles officiating. A committal service will follow in McDowell Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Active pallbearer will be Richard Patterson. Honorary pallbearers will be Dotty Hopkins, Debbie and Bob Ralston, as well as Kay Smith.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to McDowell Presbyterian Women, c/o McDowell Presbyterian Church, PO Box 66, McDowell, Va. 24458.
