Norma Sponaugle

Norma Lee (Rexrode) Sponaugle, 91, of Blue Grass, passed away Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at Sentara RMH in Harrisonburg, surrounded by her family.

She was born July 29, 1927, in Sugar Grove, W.Va., a daughter to the late Mary Jane (Eye) and Jared Newton Rexrode.

On June 11, 1948 she married Olin Ray Sponaugle, whom she met at Franklin High School. Norma attended Dunmore Business School in Staunton after her graduation.

Norma Lee was a member of the Blue Grass United Methodist Church and Blue Grass Ruritan Club. She was a charter member of the Blue Grass United Methodist Church Sunshine Club, sending out countless cards, flowers and fruit baskets to all those who were ill or going through a difficult time.

She will be remembered for her love of baking and cooking, especially her famous hickory nut cake, chicken salad and her homemade ice cream. She loved to garden and share her bounty. But above all, she will be forever cherished as being a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Olin Ray Sponaugle on October 11, 2018 and her son, Kerry Gale Sponaugle on May 13, 2015.

Surviving family members include her daughter, Chanda Sponaugle; three grandsons, Brent Sponaugle and wife, Tammy, Aaron Sponaugle and wife, Abby and Jon Sponaugle, all of Blue Grass; granddaughter, Kara Sponaugle of Waynesboro; great-granddaughter, Addison Rae Sponaugle of Blue Grass; daughter-in-law, Jeanette Jamison of Franklin, W.Va.; brother Deyerle Rexrode and wife, Elaine of Sugar Grove, W.Va.; as well as a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Tuesday, November 20, 2018 at Blue Grass United Methodist Church with Rev. Andre Crummett officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Grass Cemetery.

The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service at the church.

Active pallbearers will be Greg Puffenbarger, Tyler Puffenbarger, Trevor Whetzel, Tanner Whetzel, Derek Getic, Bradley Evick and Ben Evick.

Honorary pallbearers will be family and friends in attendance.
