Matthew Robert Sylvain, 53, of Monterey, passed away Wednesday, August 21, 2024 at his home.
Born March 26, 1971 in Manchester, N.H., he was a son of Elaine Ruth (Kelsea) Sylvain and the late Sidney Antonio Sylvain. On February 20, 1993, he married Heather Shades Smith.
Originally from Barnstead, N.H., Matthew attended school in New Hampshire, as well as Madison, Va., and ultimately graduated from Bluefield State University. Matthew was also a proud veteran of the United States Army.
A devoted Christian, Matthew walked with and loved the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He enjoyed traveling with his family, being outdoors, hiking, camping, hunting, and kayaking. Matthew loved playing sports with his kids and coaching their teams, and later in life enjoyed the same experience with his granddaughters. He was an avid fan of New England sports teams, including the Boston Celtics, Boston Red Sox, Boston Bruins, and the New England Patriots. Above all, he will be remembered as being a loving husband, father, son, and brother.
In addition to his wife of 31 years, he is also survived by his mother of Franklin, N.H.; two daughters, Caitriona Sylvain Riding and husband, Joshua of Colorado Springs, Co., and McKenzie Sylvain of the home; three sons, William Sylvain and wife, Mycah of Lexington, Ky., Ian Sylvain of Lexington, Ky. and Conor Sylvain of Toccoa, Ga.; grandchildren, Evelyn and Eowyn Riding; two brothers, Luke Sylvain and wife, April of Lebanon, Me., and Aaron Sylvain and wife, Barbara of Tilton, N.H.; sister, Melissa Brown and husband, Chris of Madison; his father-in-law, William “Bill” Smith of Charlottesville; as well as aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his father he was predeceased by his grandson, Beckett Jacob Riding.
A memorial service will be held 11:30 a.m., Monday, August 26, 2024 at Highland Baptist Church with pastors Todd Cothran and Jimmy Oliff officiating. Family will receive friends from 11 to 11:30 a.m. as well as following the service during a meal of fellowship, also at the church.
A committal service and inurnment will be held at a later date in Colebrook Village Cemetery, Colebrook, N.H.
