MONTEREY, VA Mary Carolyn Hooke, 85, of the Mill Gap Community, passed away Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at Brookdale Assisted Living in Staunton. She was born July 2, 1930 at Valley Center in Highland County a daughter of the late Charles Stanley and Evelyn Mary (Crummett) Dever. Mrs. Hooke was a homemaker, who enjoyed sewing, cooking, gardening, camping and especially being with her family and serving others. She was a member of Beulah Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school and was in the choir for many years, and served as treasurer for thirty years. Mrs. Hooke was also a member of Women of the Church, Extension Homemakers and past president of the P.T.A. On August 20, 1948, she married Adolphe Edmund Hooke, who preceded her in death on October 6, 2001. She was also predeceased by her daughter, Carolyn Mauzy on May 6, 1971 and her grandson, Josh Benson on July 2, 2012. Surviving family members include two daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and Tom Benson of Staunton, and Donna Hooke and Roger Straub of Monterey; son and daughter-in-law, Eddie and Paula Hooke of Ft. Defiance; eight grandchildren, Todd Mauzy of Bethesda, MD, Mark Shoemaker of Greenville, David Shoemaker of Staunton, Brad Benson of Waynesboro, Charles Straub of Monterey, Kristen Devers and husband, Danial of Mt. Sidney, Cara Hooke of Bluff City, TN and Kelsey Hooke of Battle Ground, IN; and seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving is her brother, Garland Dever and wife, Lillian of Monterey and special friends, Joe and Ruby Simmons of Mill Gap. A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m., Saturday, December 26, 2015 at Obaugh Funeral Home with Eddie Hooke and the Rev. C. William "Bill" Cox officiating. Committal will follow in the Monterey Cemetery with Rev. Andre Crummett officiating. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Active pallbearers will be Charles Straub, Mark Shoemaker, Brad Benson, Vernon Simmons, Derek Simmons and Richard Simmons. Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Brock, John Brock and Joe Simmons. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to an organization of your choice.
