Mary Anne Herndon Bedwell, 92, died Saturday, March 4, 2023 at Augusta Health.
She was born June 28, 1930 in Dyersburg, TN, the daughter of the late William Worth and Rosa Louise (Mason) Herndon. She grew up in Springfield, TN, where she met, and in 1950, married her high school sweetheart, William Wayne “Bill” Bedwell, who predeceased her in 1987. Mary Anne moved to Staunton from Annandale, VA in 2010.
Mary Anne had a lifelong interest in arts and crafts of all types, including but not limited to: spinning and weaving, candle making, card making, knitting, natural dyeing of yarn, crocheting, rubber stamping, paper making, and was a firm believer in the adage “she who dies with the most yarn, wins.” Her favorite design motif was butterflies, because they are free. Later in life she returned to school and became a physical therapist assistant. She spent many years helping others in this occupation, which she credited with keeping her young.
Above all, Mary Anne was an avid reader with dozens of favorite authors, series, and a universe of characters she called friends. She always had a book close at hand and devoured mysteries, science fiction, westerns, historical fiction, pop-up books, the Washington Post, Better Homes and Gardens, and TV Guide.
Mary Anne was a loving and much-loved daughter, wife, mother, and woman. She will be missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her sons, Bruce Bedwell of Staunton, and Michael Bedwell and wife, Donna of Monterey; daughter, Claudia Bedwell of Waynesboro; as well as granddaughters, Erin Brittain of Asheville, NC, and Miranda Redinger and husband, Brandon of Bremerton WA.
