Marty James Swartz, Jr., 84, husband of Carole Shoemaker Swartz of Manning, S.C., died Saturday, July 8, 2023, at his home with his wife by his side.
He was born August 19, 1938, in Pontiac, MI, a son of the late Lucille (Cobb) Swartz and Marty James Swartz, Sr.
A veteran of the United States Navy, Marty served in the Vietnam War and was very proud of his 22 years of service to his country. Following his retirement from the USN, Marty began his second career as a military defense contractor and senior research analyst. Marty held membership with the United States Navy Reserve Fleets, Elks, and American Legion.
As a young boy, Marty enjoyed time spent in Little Valley with his grandparents, where he would roam the mountains and streams. He also enjoyed playing hockey as a young man. Throughout his adult life he was an avid Dallas Cowboy's fan, who enjoyed all aspects of the game of football. In 2007 Marty and his wife decided to move to South Carolina. A golf enthusiast, Marty made the most of the limitless access to the courses in the area. Although he loved golf, Marty always looked forward to his return trips to his Big Valley camp, where he enjoyed hunting with his wife in the same mountains he had come to love in his youth.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Terry D. Swartz.
Surviving family members include his wife of 33 years; his daughter, Sondra Stockton of Scottsdale, AZ; two grandchildren, Bradley Stockton and Kelly Stockton; a sister, Patti Millican of Macon-Sabot, VA; and nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Marty’s life will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, September 9, 2023 at Obaugh Funeral Home with pastor Mike Puffenbarger officiating.
