McDOWELL, VA Marion "Jean" Perdue, 91, of McDowell, passed away, Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was born January 14, 1922 in Oakland, CA , a daughter of the late Lewallen and Alice (Denton) Gilbert. Mrs. Perdue was an active and devoted member of Highland Baptist Church, and formerly taught Sunday school at Landmark Missionary Baptist Church in Roseville, CA, where she also served as church clerk. An avid athlete in her youth, she played professional women's softball and had participated on a competitive tumbling team in the late 1930's. Mrs. Perdue was a homemaker, who took up painting when she was 86 years old. Most importantly, she was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. On August 8, 1938, she married, William Richard Clint Perdue, who preceded her in death on April 13, 1991. She was also predeceased by two sisters and three brothers. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Ben Doleman of Suffolk and Jolene and Rick Howard of Riverbank, CA; two sons and daughters-in-law, Rick and Marcia Perdue of Marshville, NC and Jeff and Debbie Perdue of McDowell; twelve grandchildren, Danny and Matthew Doleman, Kathy McCormick, Mary Conley, Jeff Perdue, David Perdue, Josh Perdue, Shelley Caltagirone, Courtney Perdue, Katie Webb, Tara Quilici and Taylor Howard; fifteen great-grandchildren; four sisters, Agnes Spradlin of Washington, Lillian Smelser, Betty Slingsby and husband, Orville and Sandy Green and husband, Freddie, all of California; her brother, Gordon Gilbert of Nevada; along with a number of nieces, nephews and special friends. A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m., Friday, May 17, 2013 at Highland Baptist Church in Monterey with the Rev. Mark Davis, Pastors Rick Perdue and Rick Howard and Elder Danny Doleman officiating. Burial will follow in Monterey Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as active pallbearers and honorary pallbearers will be friends attending the service. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, May 16, 2013 at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell.
