Marie Newman

Marie Hammer Newman, 89, died on Tuesday, December 12, 1997 at Staunton Manor Nursing Home.

She was born on January 25, 1908 at Blue Grass, a daughter of Luther and Ester (Waybright) Hammer.

On September 30, 1926, she married Walter Vernon Newman, who preceded her in death on July 21, 1974.

She was a member of Central Methodist Women and Central United Methodist Church.

She graduated from Crabbottom High School and attended Madison College. She taught a number of years at Blue Grass School.

Surviving are a daughter, Ruby N. Tichenor of Staunton; a son, V. Harold Newman of Blue Grass; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Cyrus E. of Staunton and James B. Hammer of Waynesboro; and a sister, Virginia H. Rexrode of Franklin, WV.

She was preceded in death by five brother and two sisters.

A service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Obaugh Funeral Home by the Rev. Richard Gibson with burial in Blue Grass Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Dale and Ralph Newman Jr.,  Gene and Bob Hammer, John Wagner and John Reynolds.

Honorary pallbearers will be grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Friends may also call at the home of Runy Tichenor or Harold Newman.
