Maria Tate (Sterrett) Swecker, 92 of Staunton Presbyterian Retirement Center, formerly of Blue Grass, died Thursday, December 22, 1994 at the center in Harrisonburg.
She was born on September 4, 1902 at Rockbridge Baths, a daughter of Charles Reid and Angeline Wallace (Dunlap) Sterrett.
She was member of the Crabbottom Presbyterian Church and Women of the Church. She was a graduate of Farmville State Teacher's College which is now Longwood College. She was a member of the Highland Extension Club and a member of the Highland Retired Teachers Association.
He husband, Jennings Judy Swecker, died January 13, 1962; she was also predeceased by a daughter, Frances Croawn on Stept. 7,, 1980, and an infant son, Jennings Judy Swecker Jr..
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Judy Riddick of Frankl and Betty S. Abbott of of Pulaski; four sons, William S. of Stuarts Draft, George R. and Robert T., both of Monterey and James L. Swecker of Beckley, WV; 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m., Monday in the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, formerly of the Crabbottom Presbyterian Church by the Rev. C. William Cox with burial in the Blue Grass Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, James Crown, Robert W. Abbott Jr., Jesse J., J.L., John R. and Dr. Williams S. Swecker Jr., David W. Kiser and W.C. Rexrode.
Honorary pallbearers will be friends attending the service.
Friends may call at Obaugh Funeral Home at McDowell or at the home of her sons, George R. and Robert T. Swecker in Monterey at anytime.
