Margaret Ruth “Peggy” Shuttleworth, 82, of Monterey, passed away Thursday, August 10, 2023 at her home.
She was born April 25, 1941 in Romines Mill, WV, a daughter of the late Robert Smith and Margaret Meigs (Frush) Shuttleworth.
One who loved to tell stories, Peggy, would share the childhood pranks while on the farm in the rural town of Romaine, WV where she was born. The fun-loving antics continued as she grew up in the suburbs of Washington DC, where she attended school, clerical school and took college classes. She applied her perfectionist skills as she worked for the IRS, US Treasury and retired from her last job at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. She developed a great love for following all of the political proceedings, history and genealogy. She was a member of The District of Columbia Society, Daughters of the American Colonists; Daughters of the American Revolutions, John Alexander Chapter; as well as the Daughters of 1812, Rockingham Riflemen Chapter.
A staunch conservative, Peggy was steadfast in her principles, devotion to God, her country and undeniably in her friendship with others. Always ready, willing, and able (especially able) to discuss politics, she was a walking, talking encyclopedia on any hot topic of the day. In addition, she was an avid reader of non-fiction.
A kind and generous soul, Peggy had a love for animals, especially Irish Setters and the beach. She had five setters as pets, her beloved Shane, Murphy, Dillon, Rylee and Riley. Every year she looked forward to her two special trips to the beach, the first with her family as they gathered at a beach house in Sandbridge, near Virginia Beach. The second, was her annual autumn gathering with longtime girlfriends at Ocean City, Maryland, where they would spend the week sharing a condominium together.
She loved every opportunity to visit with her dad on the farm in Monterey. After her retirement, she moved home to “Rollingwood Farm” in Monterey and began a new journey with her new Irish Setter puppy, Riley. She had a deep love for the farm, Highland County, and helping other people. Above all, Peggy will be remembered as a friend who was unwavering in her loyalty.
She is survived by her sisters, Virginia Ann Noel and husband, Paul of Sterling and Patricia Lee Dove and husband, Vinton of Indianapolis, Indiana; her nephews; special friends and caregivers, Donnie and Karen Botkin, Craig and Belinda Smith; as well as longtime friend and caregiver for all of Peggy’s K-9 kids, Pat Callahan.
A graveside memorial service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, August 19, 2023 in Monterey Cemetery with Rev. Andre Crummett officiating.
