Mabel Samples

Mabel Gum Samples, 87, of Monterey, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center following an extended illness.

Mrs. Sample was born Feb. 3, 1916, at Forks of the Water in Highland County, and was a daughter of the late Charles Doran and Minnie Catherine Simmons Gum.

She was employed at Montvallee Motel and retired from Aileen, Inc. She was a past member of the Forks of the Water United Brethren Church.

He husband, William Leo Samples, preceded her in death.

She is survived by a daughter, Thelma Nesselrodt, with whom she lived for three years; three sisters, Matie Rexrode of Franklin, W.Va., Helen Helmick of Mount Crawford, and Dorothy Hedrick of Blue Grass; a brother, June Gum of Springfield; a grandson; and two great-grandsons.

The Rev. Jerry Ginn will conduct the funeral 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell, where the family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be at the Monterey Cemetery.
