Lula “Duke” Walters Roberts, 69, of Burnsville, died Friday, September 12, 2003 at Bath County Community Hospital. She was born March 22, 1934 at Brownsburg, a daughter of the late Benton and Lottie Walters.
One Dec. 1, 1950, she married Grady A. Roberts.
Mrs. Roberts was a member of Burnsville United Methodist Church. She worked at The Homestead for 25 years. She was an avid bingo player and enjoyed reading The Recorder.
She was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Samuel Isaiah Salmons; two sisters, Margaret Walters and Virginia Miller; and four brothers, Bill, Tom, Benton and Shuey Walters.
She is survived by her husband, Grady A. Roberts, Sr. of Burnsville; five daughters and four sons-in-law. Ann and Skip Allen of Burnsville, Vicky and Paul Simmons of Hightown, Franny and David Neil and Gail and Sam Ervin of McDowell and Kay Smith of Staunton; s son and daughter-in-law, Grady A. Jr. and Wanda Roberts of Burnsville; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews; a sister, Helen Shue of Greensboro, N.C. and a brother, John Walters of Roanoke.
A funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, September 15, at Burnsville United Methodist Church by the Rev. Donald Lee Altizer and the Rev. David George.
Burial was in Burnsville Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Michael, Danny, Ray and Sam Roberts, Eric and Derek Smith, Michael Spurgeon, Timmy Neil and Sam Ervin.
Honorary pallbearers were friends attending the service.
