Lucy Mae Varner, 94, of Monterey, passed away Monday, June 4, 2012 at Pendleton Manor.
She was born Feb. 25, 1918 in Burnsville, a daughter of the late Howard and Louetta Eagle Smith.
Mrs. Varner was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church. She was a homemaker, who loved quilting and gardening and had also retired from Aileen, Inc. Additionally, Mrs. Varner took pleasure in volunteering her time to local organizations.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Russell Varner; her daughter, Mary Hensley; her son, David “Pood” Varner; a grandson; and her 10 siblings. She was last member of her immediate family.
She is survived by her son and daughterin law, Douglas and Martha Varner of Monterey; six daughters and four sons-in-law, Betty and Allan White of Orange City, Fla., Lena Lou and Donald Miller of Staunton, Maxine and Jaret Dever of Monterey, JoAnn and Allan Hull of Monterey; Carol Varner and companion Cathy Carpenter of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Ruth Varner and companion Todd Carter of Bexley, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m., Friday, June 8, at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell with the Rev. Clayton Payne officiating.
Burial will follow in Monterey Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be David Lotts, Pete White, Jerry Hevener, Dwayne Botkin, Stanley Graham, Bradley and Scott Hull. Honorary pallbearers will be her greatgrandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Thursday at Obaugh Funeral Home, and other times at the home of JoAnn Hull, 714 Spruce Street, Monterey.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Asbury United Methodist Church, c/o Dallas Waybright, P.O. Box 103, Monterey, Va. 24465.
