Lucy Griffin Hevener, 86, formerly of 22 Terry Street, Staunton, died Friday, April 23, 2004 at Avante in Waynesboro. She was born November 25, 1917 in Highland County, a daughter of the late Cecil and Emma Lucille Simmons Griffin.
Mrs. Hevener was a homemaker and a nanny for various schoolteachers in Staunton and was an avid gardener. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Richard Hevener in 1956; a son, Edwin R. Hevener; two sisters, Viva Harris and Pricilla Anderson and three brothers, infant twins, Roy and Ray and Eugene Griffin.
She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Shirley Rexrode of Staunton and Shelby and Charles “Bill” Grant of McDowell; a son and daughter-in-law, Donnie and Janet Hevener of McCormick, S.C.; three grandson, Jeffrey and Alan Gran and mark Rexrode; six great-grandchildren; four sisters, Peggy Griffin of Glen Cove, Fla., Dorothy Gibson of Charlottesville, Annabell Farrish of Palmyra and Nellie Grimm of Staunton and a brother, Ermon Griffin of Reva.
A funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m., Sunday, April 25, 2004 at Obaugh Funeral Home by the Rev. Milton E. Marks.
Burial will be in the Monterey Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Jeffrey and Alan Grant, Mark Rexrode, R.C. Pullin, Gary Kennedy and James A. Fitzgerald, Jr.
Honorary pallbearers will be friends attending the service.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Saturday at the funeral home.
