Leon Grant Carpenter, 85, of Monterey, died Tuesday, May 13, 2003 at The Springs Nursing Center.
He was born January 29, 1918 a son of the late Ferry Everett and Reta Clara Baldwin Carpenter.
Mr. Carpenter was an electrician for American Safety Razor Company and retired in 1978 after 24 years of service. He was a member of the Monterey United Methodist Church, the Bolar Ruritan Club, and was the bass singer for the Valley Bethel Believers Quartet for many years.
He was preceded in death by a son, Darell Leon Carpenter on May 4, 2000.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Kathleen Hiner Carpenter of Monterey; a daughter and son-in-law Patricia C. and Lawrence A. Wilson of Colonial Heights; four grandchildren, Kathy W. Heretick and husband Martin T. of Hopewell; Lucinda W. Lorentz and husband Richard D., of Colonial Heights; Michael D. Carpenter of Staunton; Teresa Carpenter Simmons and husband Michael L., of Staunton; eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Thursday, May 15, 2003 at the Monterey United Methodist Church by the Revs. Mike Sullivan, Jerry Ginn and Donald Rose.
Burial will be in the Big Valley Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 15, 2003 at Obaugh Funeral Home.
Active pallbearers will be Ronald Craig, Blane Ruckman, Wayne Hiner, Mike Puffenbarger, Bill Bratton and Mike Carpenter.
Honorary pallbearers will be Darwin King, Dr. Thaine Billingsley, Miles Kelly, Carl Jenkins, Danny Rexrode, Donald McCauly, Garland Carpenter and members of Adult Sunday School Class of Monterey United Methodist Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Monterey United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 382, Monterey, Va. 24465 or to a charity of choice.
