Leola Swadley Maloy

Leola Swadley Maloy, 89, of McDowell died Thursday evening, September 8, 1994 at her residence.

Born August 19, 1905 in Burnsville, she was the daughter of William Henry and Theressa (Revercomb) Swadley.

On May 18, 1937, she married Patrick Shannon Maloy, who died on February 22, 1956.

Mrs. Maloy was a graduate of Randolph Macon Woman's College. She taught 19 years in Lunenburg County and Highland County before retiring from teaching in 1970.

She was an active member of the McDowell Presbyterian Church, having held numerous district and local offices, served on the session, served as an adult Sunday school teacher, and was awarded honorary membership in the Presbyterian Women in 1986.

Mrs. Maloy was a charter member of the Stonewall Women's Club, a member of the Highland Extension Club for more than 60 years, a member of the Retired Teachers Association , and a member of the Sarah Murray Lewis Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.

She is survived by a son, W. Shannon Maloy of McDowell; a daughter, Georgianne Maloy Hull of Staunton; a daughter-in-law, Lucille M. Maloy; a son-in-law, Lyle C. Hull; and five grandchildren, Patrick S. Maloy, Michael L. Maloy, Julie K. Maloy, Patra S. Hull and Kristen M. Hull. She is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Cass and Jacob Maloy.

She was preceded in death by her only sister, Virginia Swadley Rexrode on January 9, 1994/

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at McDowell Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Lester LaPrade.

Burial will follow in in the McDowell Presbyterian Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Rudolph Siron, James Ralston, Dr. Joseph Malcolm, Lewis W. Shumate, Dwayne Harkleroad, Robert Nash, Benny Armstrong and Jacob Hevener.

The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Obaugh Funeral Home.
