Lee “Lunora” Doyle, 63, of Monterey, passed away Saturday, September 9, 2023 during a white-water rafting trip in Summersville, WV.
She was born April 7, 1960 in Maryland, a daughter of the late Ida Faye (Bradley) Weese. On August 21, 1982 she married Donald L.B. Doyle, who preceded her in death on August 6, 2013.
An entrepreneur, Lunora owned and operated High’s Restaurant for many years, Ernie’s Market, and Corbett’s Store. She continued her food service work throughout the community until she retired in order to spend time with her grandchildren. For many young Highlanders, Lunora was their first boss and served as a “mother hen” to each, providing advice, love, and support. She loved her adventures, traveling, and trying new things. She will be remembered for her outgoing personality, generosity, and strong work ethic. Lunora will be especially remembered for her ability to befriend anyone, never having met a stranger. Above all, she loved her family and adored her grandchildren. When they were with her, she wore a smile from ear-to-ear.
In addition to her mother and husband, she was predeceased by a son, Christopher Allen Sweeney; and brother, William Bradley.
She is survived by her son, Michael Ray Sweeney, Jr. and wife, Karen of Blue Grass; grandchildren, Mason and Martha Sweeney; sisters, Linda Liptrap of Clifton Forge and Sherry Wolfe of Monterey; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and honorary family members.
A celebration of life will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, September 23, 2023 at The Highland Center with pastors Buddy Davis and Mike Lambert officiating. The family will receive friends during a covered dish reception to follow at The Highland Center Pavilion. Burial will be private in Monterey Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Glenn Robertson, Robert Robertson, Curtis Bradley, Paul Franklin Cauley, Phillip Wimer and Joey Cuento.
Memorial contributions may be made to VCE-Highland, PO Box 528, Monterey, Va. 24465, in the memo put “4-H Camp” in memory of Lunora Doyle.
