Kathleen Shumate Marshall, 96, formerly of McDowell, Highland Co., Va. died Monday July 18, 2005 at Fishers, Indiana.
She was born Aug. 20, 1908 in the family home near McDowell, a daughter of the L.H. and Effie Pope Shumate.
On June 25, 1929 she married Burnell Campbell Marshall in Washington, D.C. He preceded her in death in 1968.
Mrs. Marshall was a 1925 graduate of McDowell High School and attended Radford College. She taught school for 4 years and then assumed the position of Superintendent of the Spa at The Homestead Hotel in Hot Springs, Va. She held this position for 32 years, until her retirement to the family farm in 1973.
She was a member of the McDowell Presbyterian Church where she served as an elder, Sunday School teacher and carious church-related committees and activities. She volunteered for civic and community functions, was a member of the Professional and Business Women’s Club, and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Her activities, interests and hobbies ere many. Among there was a passionate love of reading all literature from the light to the classics. She enjoyed an active social life and entertaining and was an excellent hostess. She was renowned for her outstanding and exquisite needlework. She loved gardening and was an avid sports enthusiast. Her favorite team being The Duke University basketball team.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Dyer Sloan and a brother Lewis Miles Shumate.
Survivors include one son, Henry Campbell and his wife, Deborah, with whom she had been residing; a grandson, Thomas Henry Marshall; two granddaughters, Kathleen Anne Marshall and Natalie Elizabeth Marshall; one great-granddaughter, Hunter Elizabeth Abdow; and a sister, Diana Crawford. Also several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 23, 2005 at the McDowell Presbyterian Church. The Revs. Lester LaPrade and Gene Saud will officiate. Burial of her ashes will be in the Shumate Family Cemetery (four miles south of McDowell on Route 678).
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to be made to The McDowell Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 66, McDowell, Va. 24458 or to The Highland Medical Center, P.O. Box 490, Monterey, Va. 24465.
