Joseph Thayer Mullenax, 81, of Blue Grass died on Sunday, January 4, 1998 at Staunton Manor Nursing Home.
He was born on March 7, 1916 at Highland County, a son of Henry Walter and Mamie K. (Collins) Mullenax.
He was a member of Blue Grass United Methodist Church. He was a farmer and also worked on a sawmill until he retired in 1978. He served in the Army during World War II. He was a member of American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Blue Grass Ruritan Club.
In addition to his widow, Mildred (Mullenax) Mullenax, surviving are two daughters, Janet Mullenax of Blue Grass and Barbara M. Bennett of Riverton, WV; three sons, Richard of Blue Grass, Larry of Sedalia, Colo., and Donald Mullenax of Weyers Cave; two sisters, Gladys M. Swecker of Harrisonburg and Thelma G. Mullenax of Staunton; a brother, Fred B. Mullenax of Franklin, WV; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Milton Mullenax, on October 7, 1968.
A service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Obaugh Funeral Home by the Rev. Richard Gibson, assisted by the Rev. Joe Bradford, with burial in Blue Grass Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Harry, June and Richard Swecker, Gene and Bobby Hammer, James Mullenax and Jeff Eye.
Honorary pallbearers will be friends attending the service.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
