Joseph “Tiger” Roscoe Armstrong, Jr., age 80, of Churchville, passed away Saturday, May, 4, 2024 at Brookdale Senior Living in Harrisonburg.
Mr. Armstrong was born April 30th, 1944, a son of the late Joseph Roscoe, Sr. and Mary Louise (Mongold) Armstrong. He was raised by his grandparents, the late Roy “R.W” Wandless and Margie Pauline (Siron) Armstrong, whom he lovingly referred to as “Mom.” On September 16th, 1967 he married Roberta Swisher, who preceded him in death on July 30th, 2020.
A U.S. Army veteran, Joseph served with the 1st Infantry Division (The Big Red One) in Vietnam where he was wounded in combat, earning the purple heart for his sacrifice. Later in life, he worked at VDOT and as a quality control inspector for the Bath County Pump Storage Project.
Joseph enjoyed time spent in the outdoors deer hunting and fishing for trout, bass, and crappie. He loved his community and would often travel to bluegrass festivals. Active in organizations, he was a member of the Staunton Moose Lodge #1635, the Izaak Walton League, VFW Post #2216, and the NRA. More than anything he loved his family unconditionally, which of course included his beloved cats. Joseph will be remembered as a man of honesty and integrity who served his country and those around him.
In addition to his parents, grandparents, and beloved wife of fifty-three years, Joseph was predeceased by his brother, Richard ‘Popsicle” Wayne Armstrong; and nephew, Wayne Lee Armstrong.
Joseph is survived by his sons, Lance Armstrong and wife, Christina, and Scott Armstrong and wife, Samantha all of Churchville; brother, Thomas “Tom” L. Armstrong and wife, Linda of Staunton; grandchildren, Austin and Josef Armstrong, and Robby Knupp and wife, Nicole; great grandchildren, Jaxon, Sophia, Aria, and Cecilia Knupp; aunt, Eugenia (Mongold) Bowers of Churchville; nieces, Amy L. Armstong and Kristen Swisher; and nephew, Kevin Swisher.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m., Friday, May 10th, in Green Hill Cemetery with Rev. Lester Kennedy officiating.
Pallbearers will be Fred Bowers, Carroll Eckard, Steve Morris, Robert Synder, and grandsons, Austin and Josef Armstrong.
The staff of Obaugh Funeral Home will receive those who wish to pay their respects throughout the day on Thursday, May 9th, at the funeral home in McDowell.
