Jonathan “Ray” Eagle, age 92, of Doe Hill, died Sunday, June 29, 2008 at Ruxton Health Care of Staunton. Mr. Eagle was born May 24, 1916 at McDowell a son of Jonathan Clark and Ida (Blagg) Eagle.
On April 13, 1946 he married Elsie Wilfong who died August 22, 1992.
Mr. Eagle was a farmer, a lifelong producer of maple syrup and had worked 10 years with VDOT. He was a member of the Doe Hill United Methodist Church and was a past treasurer of the McDowell United Methodist Charge. Mr. Eagle was a charter member of the Stonewall Ruritan Club and had maintained a perfect attendance since the club’s inception in October 1951. As a Ruritan, Mr. Eagle had served as past president, zone governor, and a representative at national conventions. During WWII he had served in the U.S. Army as an infantryman, moving through France, Belgium and Germany. As a veteran Mr. Eagle belonged to and was a chaplain of American Legion Post 155.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Edward, Henry and Milton Eagle; a sister, Laura Price and a grand-daughter, Candace Adkins.
Survivors include a daughter, Wanda E. Gokey of Wheeling, WV; a son and daughter-in-law, Jay and Williette Eagle of Doe Hill, as well as three grandchildren, Eddie J. Eagle of Churchville, Alex Ray Eagle of Wheeling, WV and Lisa France of Norfolk.
A funeral service will be conducted Saturday, July 5, 2008, at the Doe Hill United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dave Boger. Burial will be in the Doe Hill Cemetery. Active pallbearers will include Eddie Moyers, William Harris, James Puffenbarger, Lee Blagg, Gary Simmons and Charles “Sonny” Varner. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Friday at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell.
