John "Bob" Hooke

John Robert “Bob” Hooke, 91, of Hightown, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, at Kings Daughters Community Health and Rehabilitation Center in Staunton.

Mr. Hooke was born May 24, 1913, in Boyer Siding, W.Va., and was the son of the late George Wicklin Sr. and Anna Belle Hoover Hooke.

He was reared in McDowell. As a youth, he joined McDowell Presbyterian Church. During World War II he was a welder at Newport News Shipyard. He farmed in Sedley from 1947 to 1959. In 1959, he moved his family to Highland County where he was a livestock farmer and hauled logs until retiring. He was a former Highland County Supervisor. He was a past member of Mill Gap Ruritan Club; a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 85 in Courtland and past member of the Masonic Lodge No. 110 in Highland County.

On Dec. 12, 1941, in Franklin, Southampton County, he married Myrtle Marie Hundley; she preceded him in death June 24, 1994.

Surviving are a son, Robert Leslie Hooke of Gretna; a daughter, Iris Anne Hooke of Hightown; two sisters, Marry Katherine Crummett of Blue Grass and Dorothy Elizabeth Garrett of Baytown, Texas, and a number of nieces and nephews.

The Rev. James W. “Bill” Moore will conduct the funeral, 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Obaugh Funeral Home. Burial with Masonic Rites will be 2 p.m. Sunday in Rosemont Cemetery in Sedley.
