Mr. John Jarrell Whitelaw Jr., 56, of Evans, died Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, at the Medical College of Georgia.

The funeral was held at 4 p.m., Thursday, August 12, 2004, at Wesley United Methodist Church, Evans, with the Rev. Greg Porterfield officiating.

A graveside service will take place Saturday, August 14, at 11 a.m. at Monterey Cemetery, Monterey, Va. with the Rev. Mike Sullivan officiating.

Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell, Va. will be handling final disposition arrangements.

Mr. Whitelaw was a native of Baltimore, Md., and was a U.S. Army veteran. He had over 30 years of government service, nine of which he worked for the Department of Defense at Fort Gordon, where he was manager of operations. Mr. Whitelaw was president of ROTC Boosters Club for two years, head coach of Columbia County Patriots U 19’ 81 Girls, a member of Augusta Genealogical Society, coach of Columbia County recreation department for soccer, and the recreation sports coordinator for Wesley United Methodist Church.

He was an avid outdoorsman who loved the great outdoors. He loved to be on the water, including crabbing, he also enjoyed basketball and softball. He is an alumnus of the University of Maryland; Go Terps! He loved his job and his coworkers. He and his family were world travelers. He was a husband, father, brothers, son and best friend to many. We love him so much and he will be missed.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Loleta Ayers Whitelaw.

He is survived by his wife, Susan Kalwa Whitelaw of Evans; one son, Nathan Whitelaw of Evans; one daughter, Julie Whitelaw of Evans; his father, John Jarrell Whitelaw Sr. of Mill Gap, Va. and a brother, Ronald Whitelaw and wife Linda of Germantown, Md.
