MONTEREY, VA John Baldwin Reynolds, 87, of Monterey passed away Friday, November 28, 2014 at Augusta Health. He was born August 27, 1927 in McDowell a son of the late Robert Lawrence and Bessie Mae (Ralston) Reynolds. Mr. Reynolds served in the U.S. Army. He was an alumnus of Bridgewater College and received his master's degree from University of Virginia. He started his career at Monterey High School in 1952 teaching general business and bookkeeping. The school year 1953 to 1957, he was principal and business teacher at Blue Grass High School. From 1957 to 1964, he was assistant principal, business teacher, girls' basketball coach, track coach and P.E. teacher. In this time frame (1959-1964) the girls' basketball team in Monterey won three district championships in District N and one district championship in District O. From 1964 to 1973, Mr. Reynolds was principal of Monterey Elementary School. He also taught bookkeeping and behind the wheel drivers education at Highland High School. He was principal of Highland Primary and Highland Elementary Schools from 1974 to 1976. From 1974 to 1985 he was principal of Highland Elementary School. Mr. Reynolds spend the last two years as the Administrative Assistant of Highland County Public Schools, retiring in 1987, after 35 years. Mr. Reynolds was an Elder, Clerk of Session and Trustee of Monterey Presbyterian Church and a former Sunday school teacher. He was a member of the Monterey Lions Club, where he was serving as sight chairman and had been a past president and secretary; 6o year member of Highland Masonic Lodge #110 A.F. & A.M.; former board member of Highland Medical Center and Highland Center and past member of Highland County Planning Commission and Stonewall Ruritan Club. He was an avid golfer, a loyal UVA fan and loved to hunt and fish. He was preceded in death by his son, Billy Reynolds; brother, Leonard Reynolds, who was a casualty of WWII and stepmother, Hazel Lockridge Reynolds. He is survived by his wife, Marlene N. Reynolds, whom he married, April 9, 1955; daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Michael Starkey of Rocky Mount; two grandchildren, Sarah R. and Clark R. Starkey; twin sister, Connie Martin of McDonald, PA and sister, Jean Hiner and husband, Ron of Staunton; as well as a number of nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m., Monday, December 1, 2014 at Monterey Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Melissa Litrel Harmon officiating. Burial will follow in the Blue Grass Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Clark Starkey, Dan Sunderlin, J.C. Sunderlin, Marty Hiner, Steve Hiner, Bill Wagner, Jerry Moats and Jerry Hooke. Honorary pallbearers will be Austin Shepherd, Jim Whitelaw, George Conley, Ballard Preston, Francis Fenn, Dwayne Harkleroad, Randy Hooke and Bucky Reynolds and members of Monterey Lions Club. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m., Sunday at Obaugh Funeral Home.
