Joe Sullenberger, age 86, of Staunton, died Friday, June 30, 2006 at Bridgewater Home, Inc. He was born September 7, 1919 in Monterey a son of the late Don and Mary Madge (Seybert) Sullenberger.
Mr. Sullenberger attended VPI (Virginia Tech) and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII.
He and his wife owned and operated Four Winds Restaurant and Service Station in Monterey for eight years. He was then employed by the Virginia Division of Forestry and retired after 20 years of service. He was a member of the Highland Masonic Lodge #110 for fifty years.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Anderson and Mary Madge Richardson and four brothers, Harmon “Pete” Sullenberger, Jack Henry Sullenberger, Lynn Sullenberger and Don Sullenberger, Jr.
In addition to his wife of 58 years, Jean Stinnett Sullenberger, family members include a sister, Sara Bobbitt of Montross; a son, Blair Sullenberger of Mt. Sidney; two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Quinton James of Roanoke and Melanie and Harry Lunsford of Staunton; three grandsons, Wesley James of Lubbock, TX and Matthew and Brian Lunsford of Staunton; a granddaughter, Hilary Sullenberger of Richmond and numerous nieces and nephews.
The body was cremated per his request. A graveside service was conducted at 10 a.m., Monday, July 3, 2006 at Monterey Cemetery, with Masonic Rites and Veteran Honors.
The family received friends at the residence, 403 Audubon St., Staunton.
