Jessie S. Armstrong, age 84, of Churchville, went to be with the Lord, Friday, March 24, 2006.
She was born May 19, 1921 at Sugar Grove, WV a daughter of the late Riley Jacob and Maggie Viola (Smith) Simmons. On April 11, 1936, she married Melvin S. Armstrong, who preceded her in death on December 24, 1986.
She was also predeceased by four sons, Larry Dean, Vernon Lee, Lenwood and Richard Armstrong; three sisters, Pauline Crigler, Della Siron and Lula Belle Alserness and three brothers, Obie, Alvin and Leo Simmons.
Mrs. Armstrong was a member of The Lighthouse Church in Swoope and also attended the Church of God in Deerfield. She had worked at King’s Daughters’ Hospital and was a local caregiver.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Norma June and Donald S. Slawson of Doe Hill and Brenda and Jim Crump of Churchville; three sons and daughters-in-law, Lyle Wayne and Nettie Armstrong of Doe Hill, Steve and Devonne Armstrong of Doe Hill and Marvin and Peggy Armstrong of Churchville; 24 grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Charlotte Tichenor of Staunton; two brothers, Norval Simmons of Cleveland, OH and Blaine Simmons of Staunton and a special friend, Jimmy Lucas.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m., Monday, March 27, 2006 at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell by the Rev. Harold Lee Wade and Rev. Jerry Thomas.
Burial will be at McKendree Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be the grandsons, Darryl, Jeff, Eugene, Stevie and Jess Wayne Armstrong and Donnie Slawson. Honorary pallbearers will be grandchildren and friends attending the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home and other times at the residence of Brenda and Jim Crump.
