James “Jimmy” Russell Hiner, age 91, of Monterey, passed away Tuesday, April 1, 2025 at his home.
Born on September 12, 1933 in the Dry Branch area of Mustoe, Jimmy was a son of the late Forest Taylor and Mary Susan (Waggy) Hiner. On January 4, 1964, he married Mary “Jean” Ferguson.
A veteran of the US Army, Jimmy was stationed in the Marshall Islands, where he honorably served as a military policeman. He was a member of Hamilton Chapel Advent Christian Church, and served as a long-time trustee of the church. Throughout his life Jimmy held many occupations; he had been employed at The Homestead as purchasing agent, at Bath County Pump Storage, and at the Former Highland Farmer’s Cooperative. But, of his many jobs, the one he most cherished was raising sheep alongside his wife, Jean.
A beloved community member, Jimmy enjoyed visiting with friends, hiking, and hunting for ginseng and morel mushrooms. Additionally, he was an avid antique collector, who had a full table at Pat’s Antiques in Verona. He also enjoyed watching game shows like Wheel of Fortune, The Price is Right, and especially his favorite, Jeopardy. Above all, Jimmy will be remembered as a devoted husband—rarely seen without Jean by his side—as well as for his intelligence, positive demeanor, and caring spirit.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, Harvey Hiner, Hattie Lovegrove, Helen LeSeur, Hilda Palkot, Hallie Harris, and Ralph Hiner.
Surviving family members include his wife of 61 years, Jean Hiner of Monterey; a host of nieces and nephews; as well as several very special friends.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, April 12, 2025 at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell with pastor Dennis Baldwin officiating. Burial will follow in Hamilton Chapel Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be his nephews, as well as friends in attendance.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Additionally, the room will remain open throughout the day Friday, April 11th from 9a.m. – 5 p.m. for those wishing to pay their respects.
Memorial contributions may be made to Advent Christian Village at Dowling Park, PO Box 4305, Dowling Park, FL 32064.
