James “Lawrence” Beverage, 84, of the Strait Creek community of Highland County, died, Friday, July 5, 2002 at his home. He was born May 12, 1918 in Highland County, a son of Andrew Morgan and Vergie Beverage Beverage.
On October 2, 1937 he married Lalie Varner.
Mr. Beverage was a member of the Seybert Chapel United Methodist Church. He was retired from the Virginia Department of Highways in 1982, after 32 years as an equipment operator.
Mr. Beverage was preceded in death by two sons, Porter and Rodger Beverage.
In addition to his wife of 64 years, he is survived by a daughter, Thelma Chestnut and her husband Lowell of Woodbridge; two sons, Berlin Beverage and his wife Margaret of Monterey and James Beverage of Waynesboro and special friend, Jan Selzer of Staunton; a sister, Anna Grace Harold of Staunton; two brothers, Cyril Beverage of Monterey and Raymond Beverage of Mt. Sidney; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m., Monday, July 8, 2002 at Obaugh Funeral Home by the Rev. Mike Sullivan and the Rev. Jerry Ginn.
Burial will be in the Beverage Memorial Cemetery at Strait Creek.
Active pallbearers will be Russell Fleisher, Melvin, David, Bob and Wayne Beverage and Al Perrie.
Honorary pallbearers will be the grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Sunday evening at the funeral home.
