WARM SPRINGS Jackie Olden Leary, 78, of Warm Springs, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at his home and surrounded by family. He was born August 19, 1934 in Healing Springs a son of the late Kenton Equalia and Cora Virginia (Rose) Leary. A retired logger, Mr. Leary had additionally worked as a pastry chef at the Homestead for 16years as well as a construction worker and superintendant for various companies. Mr. Leary loved to hunt, fish and enjoyed time spent outdoors, especially in the Allegheny Mountains. He will be remembered as a loving family man and provider with a strong work ethic, a work ethic "as strong as the mountains". Mr. Leary was also known to have never met a stranger and was always willing to help his friends and neighbors. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Michael Lynn Leary and a brother, Rodney Leary. He is survived by his wife, Iris Rosalee (Jones) Leary, whom he married, October 30, 1954; two daughters, Patty Spangler and husband, Buddy of Clifton Forge and Kim Call and husband, Rick of Hendersonville, NC; five grandchildren, Darin Spangler and David Berenato, both of Roanoke, Sarah Berenato, Emily Berenato and Connor Call , all of Hendersonville, NC; two great-grandchildren, Mariah Spangler and Damien Craig; sister, Thelma Curtis of Hot Springs; brother, Hubert Leary and wife, Sherrie of Chino Valley, AZ and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his family, he is survived by special friends, David Ryder, Alvey "Moose" Humphries, Mike Pollard, Jack Lindsay as well as numerous friends and neighbors. A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m., Saturday, March 2, 2013 at Virginia Chapel United Methodist Church in Mitchelltown with the Rev. Lorrie Aikens officiating. Following cremation, a family inurnment will be held at a later date. Active pallbearers will be David Ryder, Bill Ryder, Grey Lee Hicks, Tommy Hise, Tommy Baldwin, Doug Propst and Darrell Chestnut. Honorary pallbearers will be Carl Chestnut, Danny Hicks and Wayne Leary. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Medical Home Health & Hospice, 507 E. Ridgeway St., Clifton Forge, VA 24422.
