Howard Steven Hise, age 82, of Warm Springs, passed away Sunday, January 19, 2025 at his home.
Born April 15, 1942, he was a son of the late Elzy Lee and Elizabeth Lillian (Inscore) Hise. Howard was the last living member of his immediate family. He was married to Bertha (Pritt) Hise and the couple spent forty-three loving years together until her passing in 2012.
Howard loved church and attended Chimney Run Church of the Brethren, Eden United Methodist Church, and was a member of the Hot Springs Baptist Church. Howard worked many years as a mechanic and welder with the Virginia Department of Transportation in Alleghany County. He would go on from VDOT to work and retire from The Homestead, where he held many positions. Throughout his working years, he also raised cattle on Whip Poor Will Hollow Farm and enjoyed time spent in his garden.
A kindhearted person, Howard loved all animals including deer, turkey, bear, birds, his cattle, and, most especially, his cats and dogs. He always made sure his animals were well taken care of and his deer fed. Howard was a founding and long-time member of the Bath County Committee for Emergencies. Within the committee he organized and participated in their annual apple butter fundraiser—a job he truly enjoyed.
In addition to his parents and his wife, he was predeceased by his five brothers, Charles W. Hise, Fred W. Hise, Fay Lee Hise, Burley Hise, and Roger Lee Hise; as well as a brother-in-law, Richard Blankenship.
He is survived by his sister-in-law and best friend, Mary Susan Blankenship of Warm Springs; and a number of nieces and nephews.
At Howard’s request, a cremation will take place and a memorial service will be announced at a later date.
In memory of Howard, contributions may be made to Bath County Committee for Emergencies, PO Box 202, Warm Springs, VA 24484.
